How do I get system sounds with HDMI?
- Hi,
I've got a "tower" connected to my LCD TV via a HDMI cable. My music files and sound from the internet work perfectly. I don't have any sound effects eg. when emptying the recycling bin... bizarre! I've got an ATI HD 4650 1GB PCIE graphics card with a HDMI connection built-in. Please help.

Hi Lee75,
You might need to try backing up your files and reinstall Vista.
To reinstall Windows Vista
If you want to reinstall Windows Vista by performing a clean installation—possibly to restore the default Windows settings—here's how to do it. (If you're having a problem with Windows, first see What to do if Windows won't start correctly, which explains how to use the Windows installation disc to fix problems without completely reinstalling Windows.)
Back up your files before you begin reinstalling Windows, even if you're reinstalling Windows on a hard disk partition. A clean installation replaces the current version of Windows and all personal files.
1.
Turn on your computer and insert the Windows Vista DVD or CD.
2.
On the Install Windows page, follow any instructions that might appear, and then click Install now.
3.
On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. You will need an Internet connection to get installation updates.
4.
On the Type your product key for activation page, we strongly recommend that you type your 25-character product key to help avoid problems during activation.
5.
On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms.
6.
Follow the instructions on each page. On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.
7.
On the Where do you want to install Windows? page, select the partition where you want to install Windows.
8.
Click Next to begin the installation. You might see a compatibility report.
9.
Follow the instructions.
NoteBe sure to enable existing, or install new, antivirus software after the installation is complete.

Hi Lee75,
Thanks for using the Answers Forum.
Are you missing any other sounds besides the Vista sounds?
The sound theme may have been turned off somehow.
You can check by clicking Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Personalization > Sounds.
You can change the sound scheme with the drop-down menu.
Please let us know if this helps.

The Sound Scheme (with the drop-down menu) is on Windows Default. None of the sounds when I go --> Test, work.
Lee Hello, Lee
Check the default sound output by right clicking on the speaker icon in the Notification area, choose Playback Devices and verify that the HDMI sound device is selected as default. To set an item as default right click on it and choose Set as Default Device.
Let us know if this helps.

Yeah, I've already got the green tick next to my Digital Output Device (HDMI). When I right-click on it and select --> Test, the "bars" fluctuate once then make a very quiet beep on the second fluctuation.

Puzzled HDMI User - Hi Lee75,
Try turning your volume up more. If you can barely hear the test sound the recycle bin is a little softer than that.
Please post back and let us know if that works for you.

If I turn the TV volume up then all my other sounds, like music files and internet, are deafening. Still no recycle-bin sound this way anyway!
Lee Hi Lee75,
Try uninstalling the driver for your sound card and let windows re-detect it again or reinstall it manually.
Make sure you have the latest Driver for your sound card handy just in case.
Right click on “Computer” >
Choose “Manage”>
Choose “Device Manager”>
Locate your Sound Card and Uninstall the driver >
Reboot your computer and let Vista redetect it again.
Hope that helps.

- I am having the same problem as Lee75. In my known issue:
I have an ASUS EAH4550 Low Profile ATI HD 4550 HDMI edition and an HDMI Hannspree HF257 25" Widescreen Monitor.
I couldn't hear the HDMI at first until I followed these steps
* Reboot computer and start the BIOS setup (F2 repeatedly until it shows)
* Go to Advanced / Integrated Peripherals / On Board Sound Disabled (Dell Studio Slim Desktop BIOS)
* Have the HDMI to HDMI cable plugged in both the video card and monitor.
I can hear continuous audio like movies and music but not the windows (error sound "gonk"). It goes "nk" instead of "gonk".
I went to the "Playback Devices" found "2-High Definition Audio Device" and clicked "Configure" and then "Test"
When test plays you generally hear do-do-do-do low bells on the left and do-do-do-do high bells on the right.
When test plays on HDMI do-do low bells and do-do high bells.- Edited byjosephz2va Sunday, June 28, 2009 12:23 PM
- Hi josephz2va,
I'm running Vista... firstly, my BIOS access is by pressing DEL on start-up and when I go to Integrated Peripherals, it has no reference to On Board Sound?!
Lost,
Lee75 I can hear continuous audio like movies and music but not the windows (error sound "gonk"). It goes "nk" instead of "gonk".
I've heard this with sounds before... For me it had to do with the sampling/bitrate/whatever you call it. The kind of settings that have numbers like "14000Hz" in them.
Sorry for the terrible lack of proper terminology, but I hope that helps somehow.- I have this same problem on a new system build connected by HDMI cable to a Panasonic plasma tv. On start-up, Windows will play a truncated version of the Windows welcome sound when first showing the Windows logo that appears before the password screen. (The first part of the welcome sound is cut-off, but the rest of the welcome sound plays through to the end.) No system sounds will generally play after that point, and tests in the Sound part of the Control Panel will only play one or two very muffled beeps (i.e. not the full register of tones that should play if the test is working). Interestingly enough, iTunes runs beautifully, and I can get full audio from audio and video programs run on iTunes. While iTunes is running, Vista's system sounds (and the test sounds in the Control Panel) will also play.
1. I have updated all drivers to the latest version recommended by Asus (the manufacturer of the motherboard). When that didn't work, I installed the latest version of the drivers published by NVIDIA for the motherboard chipset, the GPU and HDMI sound and the latest version of the drivers published by Realtek for the onboard sound chip.
2. When that didn't work I reinstalled a clean version of Windows, and reinstalled the latest version of the drivers recommended by Asus.
3. In the sound control, I have tried SPDIF out, digital out, Realtek HDMI out and NVIDIA HDMI out settings. The NVIDIA HDMI settings have gotten the only positive results to date (see description of current limited capabilities, only available under NVIDIA HDMI settings).
Since this problem does not seem to affect iTunes (but affects all of the Windows Vista sounds), I suspect that this is a problem with Vista. Moreover, this does not appear to be an isolated problem limited to this thread. There are a lot of similar threads dealing with HDMI issues in relation to Vista machines.

UPDATE: Windows 7 upgrade has solved my problem... that or the new HDMI audio driver I downloaded for free from ATI Radeon!
