    Hi Kclimer,

You can go to Control Panel>Programs & Features and make sure all Java entries are uninstalled. Reboot.

Then download JRE 6 Update 14 from here:

    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

    Install it again.

    shayvon,
These errors are InstallShield error codes, which indicate that an action failed during installation process.

    SOLUTION

Please try to download and install the offline installer from the official Java site:

If you have any problems or need additional help just let us know.

    Thank you,

    Hi shayvon and Kclimer

Thank you for Posting on Microsoft Answers.

This problem occurs when the server is too busy or when the network is too congested to serve the file. Please retry by running the installer again.  This information supplied from the following link

    http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=655442

    Click on All Programs
    Click on Accessories
    Click on System Tools
Click on Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) – it may also say (Without Add-ons)

Please reply back and let us know if this is still an issue, if so we will continue troubleshooting - thank you

Thank you for helping me, but that still did not work.  I am still getting the error "1606. Cannot access network location %AppData%\".  I am wondering if it could be something to do with the registry?  I have checked some of the values and they appear to be correct, all except for the default.  I am not sure what is supposed to be listed there.  Can you help in this area?  I appreciate it so much.

Same problem here...what has changed??? except for Microsoft updates in the background???

Also going out of my brain. Friday Java worked, now it is broken and I can't upgrade / downgrade..nothing

Always get Error 1606 when I try to install it.

Hope there is an easy fix for something I did not change in the first place...

Look at the posts marked as answers in this thread. They should help you resolve the problem (or didn't they work)?

I have followed *all* instructions above... (thats how I got to the bottom of this thread ;)

So let me tell you a little more about what I am doing and what I have... I hope that will help to solve my problem.

    History:
4 days ago in the morning, java was working fine.
I did not install any new programs
In the afternoon, my java chatroom I use was not working.
So...I spoke to others through messenger and was told no problem with the chatroom

Yesterday, I tried to install the lastest Java BOTH online and offline
Ofcourse I removed all (2) previous installations of Java through control panel.
Also I tried to install in, Explorer, Chrome and I even downloaded Firefox (just to try to install this java) and none of these worked.

    Errors:
    If I try to install from the offline version, I get the following message;
Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\

If I try to install the online version
    uncompression of downloaded file failed

    Conclusions:
The fact that I can install another program (such as Firefox) gives me hope that it is not a global system problem

    Extra info:
I am running a fairly fresh installation of Windows Vista (approx 2 months old)
It is a bare bones installations with just basic programs and add-ons installed (eg, flash java, antivirus, firewall etc)
It has been rock solid and stable and no other problems with installing programs or general operations of Windows Vista.
My system is up to date with all updates from Microsoft.

    Hope this helps...

and thank you for yor time

    Regards,

    Jc

    The experts have gone quiet...

perhaps I am in the wrong forum for help with a Microsoft problem because it involves Java?

...The latest java downloads fine for my linux o/s...maybe I should be spending less time here and more time on Linux...

Thanks anyway to anyone who took the time read my problem....

I can't live without Java (need my chatroom) so I must either re-install windows and hope the problem will not come back when I install the microsoft updates (too paranoid not to install the updates) OR start getting used to linux.... and I must say Linux is certainly coming of age and has a lot of community support.... not that it needs it for Java because Java simply works under my Linux installation...

My recent problems with Error 1606 are with trying to download Java.  However, my previous computer (I had it for 2 weeks) could not install Live Messenger, or Microsoft Enterprise Office HUP, or drivers for my Canon printer due to Error 1606.  When I took the computer back the guys at Geek Squad offered to check the registry, and it really lit up.  "Oh yeah, lots of registry problems."  So they worked on it for 45 minutes and found they were getting lots of undefined errors.  They recommended I exchange computers, which I did (swapped the EMachines for a Compaq).  That was yesterday.  HUP has loaded fine, so has Messenger and Yahoo talk.  But when asked to download Java to support Runescape, Error 1606 popped up again. I did a full system scan with Norton and they found just one tracking cookie, which was resolved.  This is just freaky.  And all of the "answers" that seem to be out there are guesses.  Windows 7.
