I'm getting Error Message when trying access various control panel options.  Message is: C:\Windows\system32\verclsid.exe            The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction  CS:llea IP:0122 OP:ff ff6e 6b 20  Choose close to terminate the application

I have a Gateway Model M6841, running Windows Vista.  I'm getting this message, anytime I try to go into my control panel or when I right click on anything. Sometimes it just comes up once other times it will come up 4/5 times in a row before I've closed the first window.  I'm not very computer savvy so if anyone knows if there is a simple solution I could try I would appreciate it.  I have run virus scans with Norton, Spybot, Ad-Ware, I've tried restore and chkdsk.

    Hi Marie,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers!

I would suggest you to turn off Windows Update and then run a Malware scan on the computer.

a.Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
b.In the left pane, click Change settings.
c.Choose the option Never Check for Updates and click on Ok.
If you get the consent prompt to click on continue, click it.

Check out the link below which talk about How to turn automatic updating on or off

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off

Now restart the computer and check if the issue repeats.

Download the Malicious Software Removal Tool from the link below and scan for Malwares.

Note: Windows Update Status should be off while running the Malware Scan.

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx

Once you run the Malware Scan, then try Turning on Windows Update and check if the issue repeats.

    Hope this information is helpful.

    Regards,

    Hi,

Thank you for your help.  The steps were easy and I did everything but I'm still having the problem.  The Malware Scan found nothing, I did a quick scan and a full scan.

If there is anything else I could try I'd like to hear.

    Thank you again

    LuMarie
