I uninstalled the old Nvidia drivers (190.62), restarted my machine and double clicked the new Nvidia driver installation icon (191.07). It seems to be ok except instead of the message 'please restart the computer' I get the message 'no changes have been made'. When I click 'finish' Windows gives me the message 'the program didn't install properly' So I click reinstall software with recommended settings but then I get an error message 'this is a 32bit operating system and is not compatible' Please download the correct drivers. It is Windows Vista 64 Ultimate I'm running so this makes no sense. I retried to install the drivers from scratch and clicked 'this program installed correctly' instead but after rebooting the graphics card is listed as 'unknown device' in device manager. I have since tried installing the old driver but now get the same problems and it doesn't install. I tried to install the driver through device manager but even though it finds the driver it says 'access is denied' I've also tried to use windows update as its listed as an update but I just get a 'failed' message every time. I'm out of ideas, please help.......

    Hi Irfan

Thanks very much for your reply. I did have the correct driver downloaded but double checked to make sure. Also the driver I was trying to install from Nvidia and also from Windows update appear to be the same version 191.07 for my graphics card (8800 GTX). I tried Windows update because I couldn't get the Nvidia installer to work and then when that didn't work I tried to install the downloaded driver manually from Device Manager and that’s when I got the 'Access Denied' error even though it found the driver on my hard drive. My final idea was to uninstall the graphics card completely, reboot into safe mode and try and install them from there. Once in safe mode the hardware was correctly detected as an 8800 GTX and I installed the drivers with no problems. I rebooted into Windows and it seems fine. Maybe another driver or start-up program was interfering with the installation in normal mode but I'm not sure.

Incidentally I installed the 32bit version of this driver in Windows XP Professional as I have a duel boot system and it worked first time with no problems.

    Thanks again.

    Hello DogzBollx,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers!

Here are a few troubleshooting steps that you can try to narrow down the problem’s scope:

    1.   First let make sure that you have the right version of driver for your video card.

Please go to the Manufacturers website and download the correct version of driver. Since I am not aware of the model number for the device, I found a lin kto the Nvidia driver website:

    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

You can select option 2 to automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.

    2.   Once you have the right driver installed on the computer, then you can go about performing Windows updates for the hardware updates.

    3.   I also see that you get an ‘Access denied’ error when you are trying to install the driver, you can try 2 things for this, make sure that you have logged into ‘Administrator account’ on your computer or you can right click on the driver file and select the option ‘Run as Administrator’.

Try these steps and let us know the results.

    Hi guys,

I ran into the same problem trying to install new drivers for my ATI HD5870.  I download the correct Windows Vista 64-bit drivers from the AMD site.  The install program for the drivers won't even startup saying that my system is not a Windows Vista 64-bit system.  Well, that just isn't the case.  I think Vista 64-bit just has driver issues since I had the same problem.  I really hope this isn't the case with Windows 7 also.

I have not tried Windows Update, but might see what that says this evening.
