AnswerHp Photosmart 8250 won't print

I've recently installed vista ultimate and my HP Photosmart 8250 no longer works.  Print jobs sit in the queue with a status of 'error - printing'. It's a usb printer. I have deleted and reinstalled the printer, updated drivers, loaded all the HP fixes, ran their diagnostic program (does not show any errors). Checked the port mapping (it's ok). Changed the cable.

The printer works if I connect to an XP machine.

I am at the end of my capabilities - at this point I'm about to go back to XP. Any suggestions on how to get it working?

    Hi baker001,

Thank you for posting on the Microsoft Answers Community Forums.

When you installed the printer drivers and application did you get any kind of errors?

    Check print spooler service

    1.    Open the Start Menu

    2.    Type services in the Start Search area and press Enter

    3.    Click on Continue in the UAC prompt

    4.    Locate Print Spooler service

    5.    Verify that Status is set to Started and Startup Type is set to Automatic

    6.    If this is not the case then right click the service and select Start to start the service

    7.    Right click the service and select Properties and change the Startup type to Automatic

Try printing again but this time make sure you disable your security program and firewall on the computer. Also place the computer in a c lean boot state and try printing.

A clean boot is to determine if there is any third party interference during the printing process.

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.)

    2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

    3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

    4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

    5. Click OK.

    6. When you are prompted, click Restart.

    7. Log back into your Account.

    8. Test the printer.

If the problem does not return while your computer is in clean boot mode, a background program is likely causing interference. You might have to update the program or uninstall the program for this program to work. You can try to determine which background program is causing the problem while the computer is in clean boot mode.

    ---------------------------------------------------

To find the process or program at cause follow the steps starting at enable half of the Services items, from the following article:

How to perform a clean boot procedure to determine whether background programs are interfering with a game or a program that you currently use

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

    ---------------------------------------------------

    To restore your Normal startup:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.)

    2. On the General tab, click Normal Startup.

    3. When you are prompted, click Restart.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards.

some additional info - when I go into the printer tools and select calibrate colour, it calibrates and prints out 2 sheets. Aligning the print heads also prints. When I try some of the other tools (print diagnostic page, print test page) the print job fails with a status of 'error - printing'

    Hi,

Uninstall the printer drivers completely and then perform a repair of vista. You will not loose any data or application.

To perform a repair installation of Windows Vista:

    1.  Close all applications, and then restart the computer.

    2.  Insert the Windows Vista DVD or the Windows Server 2008 DVD in the computer's DVD drive.

    3.  In the Setup window, click Install Now.
Note: If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

    a. Click Start, and then type Drive: \setup.exe in the Start Search box.
Note: The Drive placeholder is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.

    b. In the Programs list, click Setup.exe.

    c. In the Setup window, click Install Now.

    4.  Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended) .

    5.  Type the CD key if you are prompted to do this.

    6.  Click Yes to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.

    7.  On the “Which kind of installation do you want?” screen, click Upgrade.

    8.  When the installation is complete, restart your computer.

After repair install the printer drivers.

    All the Best!!!!

thanks - tried this, when the I got to the upgrade step there was a warning saying 'upgrade option is disabled'.  The only option was to continue with a clean install, which I do not want to do.

    thanks anyway
