Both units are <2 months old and both run vista.  The HP Laptop works fine but the Gateway Desktop will find the printer and start to print a page but stop b4 any printing is done.  The same cables are used for both (USB>Serial).  I've tried 3x to install and uninstall it and used the "MS Fix-IT" tool.  Nothing seems to work.  Any ideas?

    Hello Eric,

Thank you for writing back on the Microsoft Vista Community Forums.

It defeniately seems to be a drivers issue for your printer.

You may try to download and install the printer drivers in Windows XP compatibility mode and verify if you can install the same and use the printer.

Also access the link below from HP and try to follow the instruction which might help you fix the issue.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01655752&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=59867

To run the installer in compatibility mode, follow these steps:

    1. Locate the Setup program that will be used to install the program.

    2. Right-click the Setup program, and then click Properties.

    3. On the Compatibility tab, click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box.

    4. In the list, select the operating system that the program ran on previously, and then click OK. If you are unsure with which version of Windows the program previously worked, you can start by selecting the option for Windows XP Service Pack 2.

    Hope the above information helps.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Eric,

Thank you for Posting on the Microsoft Vista Community Forums.

Since the printer is working fine when connected to laptop, the printer, cables and the drivers are fine. The issue seems to be related to Gateway desktop.

I would suggest you to try connecting the printer to a different USB port on the back of the computer tower and verify if the computer detects the printer.

If the issue persists, you may try to update the USB drivers on your desktop by accessing Gateway website and check if the printer works fine. Since its a new computer I recommend you to contact Gateway support and verify if the USB ports are working fine and if there are any updates to be installed on your computer.

    Link to contact Gateway: http://support.gateway.com/support/default.aspx

Note: Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

    Hope it helps.

You were 10x more help than Gateway.  They said my USB is working fine and said to call paid support.

It must be a driver thing right?  The gateway drivers are not up to date.  Is there a way I can cut & paste my laptop drivers to my gateway?

    Thanks again!
    Eric
