I got the same 'running in software rendering mode' for freecell after spending 1-1/2 days getting Vista Service Pack 2 installed.  The DirectX 3 options are unavailable; what now?  I've checked everything I can think of so far....

    Hi mjwells,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

We would be able to help you better if you can tell us - What is the make and model of your computer?

Also, check DirectX diagnostic utility to make sure Hardware Acceleration is fully enabled (if you have not already done so)

    1. Click START
    2. Type 'dxdiag' (without quotes) and press enter
    3. Click 'NO' to the driver popup
    4. Click the 'Display' tab
Under DirectX Features, are all three set to 'enable'? If not, set them to that.

If the issue does not get resolved by the above resolution then it is a guess that Vista couldn't find a proper driver for your adapter so has installed the standard VGA driver instead. You'll need to download, and install, the correct driver either from the manufacturer’s website and install it.

    Thanks,
Hope this helps. Let us know the results.
