AnswerChoppy Windows 7 Gameplay

While playing certain games such as prototype and test drive unlimited, it goes for about 5 seconds of flawless gameplay, then pauses for about a minute or three.  After that it plays again...then pauses.  I tried running Game Booster, but to no avail.  I have no viruses or anything...so why are all of my games going slow..
Oh right, before you ask...because I know you will....I have the latest grafix card firmware and software intended for windows 7...soo...yeah...

You might want to update your chipset drivers and latest BIOS update.

I have read the other threads and I have a similar problem but the solutions are not helping me. I recently upgraded to Windows 7. Now when I play a game, it opens fine, runs for a while and then the screen goes black. At first I thought this was an overheating issue, so I tracked the temps and everything is normal. I then tried different PSU's thinking maybe my power was dying, again no result. Recently I read something about antivirus programs causing trouble, I disabled and changed mine (3 times) and still no effect.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have run out of ideas. The thing is that sometimes the games run for an hour other times 2 minutes. I have an Nvidia 9800 GT M (notebook).

    Thanks in advance.

P.s. I have also manually updated my driver.

    Hi amfavs,

Try to reduce the hardware accelaration and see if this helps.
If it doesn't, you may follow the
basic troubleshooting steps that can help in fixing the issue.

Step1: Run the games in compatibility mode.

    1.                                 1.      Right click on the game that you want to play.

    2.          Click on Properties.

    3.          Click on the Compatibility tab.

    4.         Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows Vista or Windows XP wherever the game was playing without any problem.

    5.         Click Apply, and then click OK.

    6.         Double click on the game and play it.

See if playing in compatibility mode helps in resolving the issue. If you still face the same issue, go to the next step.

Step 2: Put your system in clean boot state:

        1.       Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.

        2.       Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue

        3.       On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box.

        4.       On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

Note: Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

Check whether you are able to play the game without any problem. If so, follow the steps mentioned in the knowledgebase article below to determine which service or startup item could be causing the issue.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

After performing the steps above, it is important to bring your computer back to normal startup mode.

Step 3: Reset the computer for normal startup.

Follow these steps to do so:

         1.          Click start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

        2.       On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

        3.       When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Play the games and see if the problem persists. Post back and let us know.

Hey thanks for your help. Compatibility mode helps for games installed on windows 7. The others that were installed on vista still black out. I reinstalled one of them and it fixed (at least I think so, played for an hour with no black screen). Thanks again, I love simple fixes (not when I miss them though).

That worked for a day or two. It's odd because some times the games will play for two hours and run perfectly. Then a few minutes later I will start the same game and it crashes in the first 5 minutes. Today a game crashed twice and then the third time played for two hours perfectly. I followed both of your suggestions with no advance. I saw windows 7 came out with a driver update today for my video card but that did not help either. Again thank you, and any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Side note: Dead Space and Battle Field 2 have been giving me trouble, but I can play Operation Flashpoint dragon rising and it never black-screens.  I am lost!!!

A few weeks ago my card was showing a black screen between 15min-1hr of game play. Windows 7 came out with a new driver for my card and the blacking out has stopped. However now every 5 minutes the screen becomes very choppy for about a minute, the sound stays normal but everything else slows down. I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to fix this. I have turned off anti-A and lowered the graphics and the problem still occurs...Right now I figure I will have to wait for another driver update. Choppy is def. better than a system crash, but any other advice would be great. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah I have the same problem. My video card used to crash and go to a black screen. A few weeks ago windows 7 asked me to update my video card driver and now instead of crashing I am going choppy. Its better than crashing but I would prefer neither. I have 4 gigs of ram and 1 gig of Vram.  I am pretty sure we will just have to wait for the next driver update, I have tried almost everything else.

    Good Luck.

    Hello,
Everyone i have figured out this problem. It is a compatibility issue with windows 7. On windows vista when you open a full screen game you might see some times that your theme is changed to basic while your in game. (If you alt-tabbed maybe)

DO NOT USE COMPATIBILITY WITH XP/VISTA. I have figured out that all you need to do is shut off the theme while you are in-game and that can be done by.

Run the games in compatibility mode.

    1.                                 1.      Right click on the game that you want to play.

    2.          Click on Properties.

    3.          Click on the Compatibility tab.

    4.         Click on Disable Visual Theme.

    5.         Click Apply, and then click OK.

    6.         Double click on the game and play it.

P.S. "I hope this works for all the PC gamers out there and pass this on to all forums and gamers that have this problem!" Wataflow

I will see if that works. I actually disabled my virus protection and everything cleared up. You just need to remember to put it back when you are done. I will try yours without disabling. Hope it works so I don't have to constantly disable.

    Thanks.

No luck man, still crashes. Actually went to a black screen instead of just getting choppy. There must be another reason for my choppy/blackscreen episodes. Thanks for the help though.

My anti-virus thing isnt working now either. I will let you know if anything else changes. It might be a heat issue, but I doubt it since I could run the same games and get just as hot with windows vista without crashing.

Let me know if there are any more ideas. I appreciate everything!!

Ok no problem. Also try updating your drivers for you graphics card that helped me also. You can also try running it in compatibility mode with vista and disabled theme.

Tried that too. Basically all I am doing is crashing my computer 1,000 times. I might just go back to vista, which I hate.

Ya dude my problem just came back after spending 60 dollars on modern warfare 2 it crashes. I am going to go back to vista if this problem is not fixed. Too bad Microsoft does not have any support that is free. I spent 200 dollars only to get a broken motherboard (fried from to many crashes) and now i have to find a copy of windows to buy.

Hey I kind of fixed it, but I need to know your video card type.
