This message appears when I try to run Call of Duty4 in single player mode even as an administrator with the latest patches. The multiplayer mode works fine.
I have 2 DVD drives and the message appears no matter which drive I use. The same software works fine on XP though. This is also the case for several other games I have installed and tried to run.
The Windows7 software was installed on a brand new harddrive without any issues.

    Hey Berny100,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

    a. When was the last time the game was working fine in single player mode?
    b. What is the software you’re referring to?
    c. Does the DVD- ROM drive read disc fine?

If the DVD drive has problem reading disks, I’d suggest you to refer the following link and follow the steps mentioned in the article:

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Important The above section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Just to make sure, when you click on the single play mode do you have the disc in the drive? You need to have the disc in the drive for single player. Multi-player doesn’t need the disc in the drive.

Also, it may be caused due to the presence of any virtual drive software running that may interfere. So, turn them off and check if that fixes the issue.

The issue could be related to drivers. You may have to download and install the latest display and graphics drivers to fix the issue.

To download and update driver, you can use the following methods:

    1. Use Windows Update. You might need to set Windows Update to automatically download and install recommended updates.

    2. Install software from the device manufacturer. For example, if your device came with a disc, that disc might contain software that installs a driver for the device.

    3. Download and update the driver yourself. Use this method to install a driver that you download from the manufacturer's website. Do this if Windows Update can't find a driver for your device and the device didn't come with software that installs a driver.

If Windows can't find a driver for your device, and the device didn't come with driver software, you can look for a driver on the device manufacturer's website. Driver updates are often available in the support section of such sites.

Once you find the updated driver, follow the installation instructions on the website. Most drivers are self-installing—after you download them, you usually just double-click the file to begin the installation, and then the driver installs itself on your computer.
