AnswerExtended Display automatically resets to opposite side

I use my television as an extended display.  It is to the left of my computer.  Everytime I reconnect the television after disconnecting it, it is automatically extended to the right side.  That's not so bad, but even when I don't move it and just reboot it or wake it from sleep, it automatically resets itself to being extended to the right.  Can I change the default side to extend to to the left or do something else that might save me the trouble of changing this almost every time I sit down at my computer?  I know it's only a minor inconvenience, I'm just really tired of doing it every time.  Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi Milliontimes,

Thank you for visiting Windows Vista community.

When you connect an additional monitor, Windows automatically detects it and applies the video settings best suited to the monitor's display.

When you disconnect the additional monitor, the original display settings are restored to your primary display. In addition, all open files and program windows are moved to the primary display. The next time that you connect the same monitor, Windows automatically applies the display settings that you used the last time that you connected this monitor.

     Please try the following steps:

    1. Open Windows Mobility Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Mobile PC, and then clicking Windows Mobility Center.

    2. Then, on the External Display tile, click Connect display.

    3. Click on Extended display.

If Windows can't identify the monitor that you connect, it automatically applies the last display settings that you used for that type of monitor and asks whether you want to keep the settings. Click OK to keep these settings.

If you click Cancel or do nothing, the Display Settings dialog box appears so that you can manually choose the display settings.

    Hi,

I am also having the same problem that this person mentioned and the instructions and links you gave above have not been useful to me.

When I first connected my new external monitor, it had settings that I do not want. I changed the display settings to desirable ones. However, every time I disconnect and reconnect the display, the display reverts to the settings that I do not want!

Every time I disconnect and reconnect my external display to my laptop, the settings are reset to the settings that I had gotten rid of. So every time I connect my external display, I have to go to display settings and change the settings.

It does not matter how many times I go to display settings and change the settings to what I want, when I disconnect and reconnect the external display, the external display is again set up the same way I do not want. (It switches to the opposite side of the main display etc)

I followed your instructions above and changed the settings of the external display on "Windows Mobility Center" but I am still having the same problem. EVery time I disconnect and reconnect the external display, the display goes back to settings that I do not want. It does not go back to the settings that I used most recently on the external display despite your claim above which states:

The next time that you connect the same monitor, Windows automatically applies the display settings that you used the last time that you connected this monitor.

In my experience, windows does not automatically apply the settings that I used the last time I connected this monitor.

I will appreciate any help on this.

I realized that I do not have this problem when I set the laptop's screen as the main display. So from now on I will not be setting the external display as the main monitor to avoid this problem. If I do not use the external display as the main monitor, after a disconnect and a reconnect, windows returns to the settings I last used.

I realized what the crux of the problem is: While windows remembers the settings from last time, it does not remember which monitor was being used as the main monitor. So when I disconnect and reconnect the external monitor to the laptop display, windows remembers all the settings I used the previous time EXCEPT IT REMEMBERS THEM ALL TO THE MAIN MONITOR WHICH IT NOW THINKS IS THE LAPTOP DISPLAY!!! And this is why the external display is an extension on the opposite side now!!!

I have to say that I am disappointed that this problem exists in the OS. Yeah it is a small problem but it gets annoying. Windows should not have issues with easy things like this today.
