    Hi Rongarden,

Go to your Control Panel >

Choose Taskbar and Start Menu >

Make sure that you don’t have “Auto-hide the Taskbar” selected.

    It should be unchecked.

Hope that helps, please post back and let us know.

I Too have this problem, but how do i get to the control panel without a start button? i hear the problem may be related to internet explorer.exe. and i can't find that command in the windows file. many folks say i have a virus, and its related to a "shell" in the hotkey registry, i don't know who to believe

I also have exactly the same problem. I can't run cmd prompt as i have no start button. For some reason the task manager won't start either after pressing control alt del. It basically starts windows with a blank background, and a window displaying the items that should be on my desktop, as if viewing through windows explorer. All programs work, I can still open documents and browse through all files on my computer, but can't connect to the internet or use the laptop as it's generally intended for. It's very frustrating!
