Desktop icons disappear.
They do not appear upon startup and they do not appear booting up from sleep mode. Have to manually go into view and click "show desktop icons" off and click on again. How can I prevent this annoying quirk? Ahhh, Microsoft.

Hi balbag77,
You might try SFC, looking for a corrupt system file somewhere in the log. Which would detect and fix the issue.
The System File Checker tool:
To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.
To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
3.If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
4.At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow

When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.
System Resrore:
You can try this step incase the above fails.
You can try System Restore, since your error is recent. Something you installed has had an effect on your ability to write the settings for the desktop to your configurations files.
I would not recomend going back to before you installed your anti-virus. If you think the aniti-virus may be doing it, you should use the uninstall provided by your system in Programs and Features.Follow these steps to perform a System restore:
· Open System Restore by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking System Restore. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation and follow the instructions.
