AnswerTaskbar Network system icon won't show

    Hello,

I have been a happy Microsoft user since the get-go I have a simple question to ask about something I have never encountered in all of my years of computers.

Anyone here play TES4: oblivion? well, I am a modder and I was just modding, and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 wanted to install, I closed the CS, closed my Xfire chats, and installed the service pack, I have TV near my computer and I just watched the TV as it installed.

Well, I use routers, and I need to know my internet connection, the networking notification on my task bar has disappeared!

I went to the "properties" of my taskbar, and I see the "system" icon and it will only let me check off clock, not networking.

    How do I fix this?

    Ryan

    Hi,

In order to get the network icon in the notification area:

    - Click start
    - type ncpa.cpl in the start search bar
    - In network connections, right click on LAN or Wireless (which ever you are using)
    - Click properties
    - Put a check mark on "show icon in notification are when connected"

    It should be done.

    Regards

    Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately it there is no "show icon in notification are when connected" check box.

There has got to be another way?

I have the same problem after installing SP2. Also, the sound on/off icon has disappeared. In the control panel, only Clock is possible to activate/deactivate. Network, sound and some more item is "grayed out" and not possible to "tick".

The reboot works because there is some DLL conflict that occasionally occurs with the Explorer.exe file.  If you don't want to reboot, then do this:  Bring up task manager, go to the processes tab.  Find the "explorer.exe" file, right click on it, and choose End Process.  Now, your desktop icons and taskbar will completely disappear; don't worry, the will come back.
Now, assuming you haven't closed task manager, click on "File," then "New Task(Run)."  Type "explorer.exe" in the box, then hit Enter.  The explorer process will restart, and your network icon will reappear in the taskbar notification area, and your desktop icons will also return.

This is, admittedly, a short-term solution, but I've not figured out why explorer has a conflict with that particular DLL file that handles the network notification icon.  However, this seems to be a rare hit-and-miss problem, as I have only had it occur once myself, and have only seen it happen a handful of times with my clients, since Vista was placed on the market.

Hope this helps, and let's hope MS can figure out a more permanent solution to this trivial, yet ultimately annoying problem.

Thanks Wade W! That tip got me back my battery and sound notification icons but alas I still don't have my networking icon...

If there is anyone else out there that has discovered a solution I'm all ears!!!

    Thanks in advance!
