msmpeng.exe running at 95% cpu usage
- This task has been running at 90% to 97% cpu usage since I brought up my system 10 minutes ago. Also Microsoft Antimalware gets turned off. This is running on Windows 7 RC.

- The most common reason for high CPU is a conflicting security program left in place before installing MSE. MSMPENG also consumes a lot of CPU when scanning. If you continue to encounter a problem with high CPU usage, please file a bug report.

- This high cpu usage finally stopped. I guess that this is the price to pay for this free software -;}
- Could it have been running a scan to cause the high cpu?
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below! - No I was not running a scan. I had just booted the system and was running ThumbsPlus application which takes little or no cpu.

- Similar problem here running Vista Home Premium. Usage is particularly high when opening another application, or even when opening a folder conntaining other applications.

Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare, Live Mesh, & MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator- Thanks Stephen. I have an active report in. I have, by the way, uninstalled all other security products and have exhaustively cleaned the system of any traces of other security software. CPU use is still high -- frequently in 50 percent range -- though somewhat improved after cleanup.
- We had issues in the past (with OneCare) and msmpeng conflicting with some system drivers, so the bug report will be helpful. Thanks for filing it.
