AnswerCan't utilize my original display name (created in 2007) in new "profile."

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask this, but none of the other seemed appropriate.

I haven't signed in for a while (since 2007), and when I signed in today to ask an MSE question, the forum asked me to create a profile after I successfully signed in.  When I tried to use my previous name for the profile "display" name (lalittle), however, it told me that this name was already in use.  I can still see my old post using my old display name (lalittle), so I know I am not mistaken about the name being correct, but I can't use this name for my new "profile" display name.

In other words, I am unable to create a new post using my previous name even though I'm using the same email address and user account.  It appears that this is due to the addition of this "profile" system which was not in use back when I first signed up and posted back in 2007.  I had to use the profile display name "lalittle1" instead of "lalittle" just now in order to create this post, but I'd like to use my OLD username (without the "1") if possible.

Is there any way to utilize my previous display name for my current display name?  The name is in use, but it's in use by ME using the same email address that I did back then.

Thanks for any help with this,

    Larry

    Sorry-
I have been out sick. Just seeing this now. My apologies. I have investigated, and it looks like the following happened:
We have 3 Personal User IDs (PUIDs) associated with your two accounts.
PUIDS are a key to your live IDs, which I don't have access to for privacy reasons.
For lalittle, your PUI ends in *278 (A)
For lalittle1, there are two PUIDs stored--one ending in *39B (B) and one ending in *84B (C)

Based on your info above, it looks like your original profile created here used Live ID A (your email and password).
When you came back later, you were somehow kicked out, and created a new live ID, and new profile. (resulting in PUID B)
Then, when you set up your alerts (which is on your LIve ID acocunt, not our platform profile), you changed the email, which resulted in PUID C.

To access your lalittle profile, you will need to determine the live Id and password you used to set up that profile.
The Windows Live Solution Center can help you do this.

Please let me know if htis explanation helps.

    thanks,
    Barbara

    Thanks for posting.
Our system does not enable multiple acocunts with the same live id. Are you sure that you are using the exact Live ID that you used with your original account? If so, I'll want to investigate further.

Also, can you detail for me what you mean when you said that you "successfully signed in"? Once signed in, you would be using a profile, so not sure how you would be asked to create a new one.

Thanks for the info, I'll watch to see your reply,
    Barb

    Barb,

    Thanks for the response.

By "successfully signed in," I meant that I signed into the site using my email address and password -- this was something that was set up BEFORE (long time ago), and worked to "sign in."  AFTER I was "signed in, I went to post, and I was taken to a screen that told me to set up a "profile" using a "display name."  This was something "new" -- i.e. in addition to the "account," I now needed to set up the "profile."

When I "browse the forum users," I can find my original name -- lalittle (without the "1" at the end.)  I check for threads make by "lalittle," and it pulls up this one:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistanetworking/thread/6488d740-ca07-4aaf-8fd5-fce6143e52bb.  This is definitely my post -- I remember it well and I never received a reply.

As far as the "Live ID" goes, I don't see how I would have used a different email address to sign in, and the one I used worked.  The problem seems to be related to this new "profile" thing -- the system asked me to set this up yesterday with a "display name."  There appears to be a disconnect between my original name and my current account.

One thing of note:  I did not receive an alert from your response, so I checked my "alert settings," which said this:

    ----------------------------------
You have changed your e-mail address from xxxxxxxxx%Email removed for privacy to Email removed for privacy.
Your new Windows Live ID e-mail address must be verified before it can be used to receive alerts. Validate your new e-mail address. To receive alerts on your computer or mobile device instead of receiving them in e-mail, click Continue. On the page that appears, click Edit Delivery next to a provider name.
    ----------------------------------

I put "x's" in to hide my actual address.

I have no idea what "passport.com" is -- this has never been my email address -- or why there is a "%" in the middle of the first part of the address.  It looks like the address got messed up at some point.  I hit "continue" to this message, which appeared to change the "passport" address to my correct email address, and asked me to verify the address, which I did after receiving the confirmation email.  Everything seemed to work correctly, but I still cannot use my original name.

Could you perhaps check the original name (lalittle) and see what email address is associated with it?  It should be the same as the one associated with THIS post.  I have a feeling that the "lalittle" display name is in "limbo" at the moment -- i.e. it IS the name I originally used, but it's no longer associated with my account.

    Thanks for your help,

    Larry

Any updates or further questions on this issue?  You mentioned above you would want to investigate further -- I'm just standing by for any feedback on the new information I posted in response to your questions above.

Thanks again for any help with this.

    Barb,

Are you still around?  I tried to answer all your questions and give you the details you asked for -- did you ever see my reply, and do you have any further feedback on this?  Did you look into my earlier post (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistanetworking/thread/6488d740-ca07-4aaf-8fd5-fce6143e52bb) to see if it gave any clues to why this is happening?

    Thanks again,

    Larry

    Barb,

On Nov. 4th you said you would watch for my reply, and I responded the very next day (Nov 5th), which was two weeks ago.  I noticed that you have continued to post to this forum (as recently as yesterday, Nov 18th), so I'm confused why you have still not responded to my post that provided the information you asked for.  Are you still looking into this?

    Thanks,

    Larry

Thanks for getting back to me -- sorry you weren't feeling well.

Forgive me, but I'm really confused about what I'm actually supposed to do at this point. You said that the Windows Live Solution Center can help me, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to "do" when I go to the link you provided.  Am I supposed to re-ask my original question there?  If so, "where" do I actually ask it, and what information do I give them?  Is there some way I could reference this thread so that I don't have to repeat all this information (which includes your responses)?  I'd be really grateful if you could give me some very specific instructions on how to proceed.  Please be as specific as you can, because I'm really lost here.

By the way, I'm still not receiving any email alerts when my posts are responded to.  It probably has something to do with the multiple PUID's as you mentioned above, but I wanted to mention this.

    Thanks again,

    Larry
