HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220

I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.  If you're running a third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

Tip: Reboot twice after installing IE8 Final.

Tip: Make certain that your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any) is supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage (only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December 2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment. US & CA Residents: 866-234-6020.

Your advise was very useful, wish I had read it before I installed IE8.  My issue is that I am running Norton 360 and everytime I go to a new website the Norton application gives me an message that my browser is not set to detect fraudulent or able to authenticate genuine websites.  It continues to ask to "fix", which I do and it goes back to "green".  What setting on IE8 have I missed to prevent this continuing annoyance from Norton 360?  Thank you for any assistance with this issue.

    Hi,

Wich version of Norton 360 are you running?
You can get the free update to 360 3.0 (compatible with IE8).
    See:
    http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Norton_360&thread.id=9413

I still no joy, please ask for help in the Norton (360) Community Forums or  contact the Symantec/Norton Support: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/index.jsp

    Hope this helps.

I wish they had put this 'tip' above the Install IE8 button.  I hate all the problems it caused. However if  I could get NORTON to quit going on, and more imporantly find my notifiation/system tray icons back I might be happy unil another thing doesn't work that I haven't tried yet.  And no,as usual HELP never helps.  The task and startup show my volume, network icons darkened so I cannot click them--thank god the clock escaped the vengeful IE8 or whatever I may have done in the early efforts to rid myself of the problems.  And while you are at it, tell me what forum to go to to find why I can't get audio during webinars.  And why, like now, the keys work only if I type one wait type another...like when the scans decide to run or Norton won't shut down even though closed or...

I am a middle level user but follow good instructions well. Help me please...Where can I turn on the lost icons?
    Thank you

Boy thats great. On my windows update IE8 came on there to install. I clicked install and I did not disable Kaspersky when I installed it. I have Windows Vista 64 SP1. So far no problems and I hope I do not have any. I am as you would say a dummy when it comes to computers. I know how to get on and look at things read my mail and do alright I guess. And I did not disable Kaspersky's firwall either.

I have spent nearly two days trying to install IE8.  I have had to use IE6 because IE7 does the same thing.  I installed all the critical updates, uninstalled them, and the reinstalled them.

When you first start IE8 the screen blinks a white screen for about two seconds and then nothing.  Just Blink....

I have downloaded a new Windows Update Agent and Dial A Fix and ran them following instructions exactly.  I have also tried several crypto svs start and stops as well as re registering WUPS and .DLL's

    This is driving me crazy.

Any help is already gratefully appreciated.

Don't make the switch to IE 8 if you don't have a mid-high to high end computer - IE8 32 is deathly slow even on dual core 2ghz w/ 3-4GB RAM and while 64bit is much faster it's lack of Adobe flash support cripples it to the point of analagous to having both your legs chopped off then told to run for your life.   You're basically stuck for much use w/ 32bit explorer and you're better off w/ ver 7 or 6.   Now if you have a tricked out $2500 - $10000 system you've built in the last 1.5yrs - you can get away with 32bit IE8 but you should just use Chrome or Firefox instead for most everything unless something (like MS updates) is locked to IE only.

Explorer 8 was continuously page faulting on my PC - with 2 GB of ram. This of course made windows extremely slow - virtually unuseable for me. So I've uninstalled it and wont install it again until the next service pack - when I hope you have solved the problems. ( Over 400,000 page faults in under 10 minutes ).

My vote is dont install it and suggest microsoft take off the promotion to install it.

I might try another provider - however IE is a core component of Windows XP so I guess there is hardly a reason to bother.

Perhaps readers should note that the aforementioned site isn't helpful...at least not for me.  Seems I'm directed to call MS because none of the steps worked.  So much for this upgrade...think I'll stick with IE7 until MS gets this thing worked out.

My problem was similar: IE8 appears to commit suicide seconds after trying to execute it. The solution: popup blocker was detecting IE8 as a popup [hmmm...] and killing it. I had to laugh; this popup blocker is compatible with ALL other browsers to date; apparently IE8 is trying to get in our shorts in a different way than usual and got caught; oops. With apologies to Senor Shakespeare, "Oh what tangled webs we weave when we embed applications [ie, the browser] into operating systems [ie, M$ Windows]." :-))

Well i've installed, it for the third time.

i am Happy to say, it works.

Here was the problem, i knew i didn't have spyware or virus's on my system.

The problem was in compatiblity settings.

i installed IE8, with all the trimmings. Then i went to TOOLS, scrolled down to Compatibility View.

Then Checked the Box Next to "Display All Websites In Compatibiliy View".

i'm writing this post in IE8 and i'm Ecstatic.

Here's the site that was given by MicroSoft, that helped.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/videos.aspx

    THX  :))

Ps..i had to restart IE8, for the settings to take effect.

I wish this data had been posted prior to installation! Purchased an HPG60-243DX notebook w/Windows Vista & SP1 were preloaded. Geeks removed preloaded Norton Security, so I could install Zone Alarm's Firewall. SP 2, Zone Alarm Security Suite, and ZA's recommended 'Malware' were recent downloads. \ Windows Vista's security settings have driven me crazy! Most websites I've visited for years, security wouldn't load website pages, so I began changing many security settings in order to gain access to sites I knew were safe. I set up my AOL home page and chose add-on links. Several days later... Windows Live prompted updates and I downloaded IE "8" (which turns out to be IE7 !) I began having problems. Aol 9.1 works sometimes, but its home page and add-ons are now gone... I've reconfigured my Internet settings multiple times in an effort to use either Windows Live with an AOL email-link - - OR AOL with Windows Live add-ons... which I end up with toolbars all over the screen - and some links work - others don't !!! AFTER IE7 download, my IE shortcut gives an error message that says the shortcut needs to be reset to its location, repeats its error message, then launches! I've tried to set a new short-cut but can't tell how to do it and I find no tree in Vista! My Malware runs state my Start Menu was hijacked (after IE7 was installed by Windows Live). The Malware also said I should close all programs to delete the Start Menu, but just WHY would I think it advisable to delete this valuable item?!! I really had no problems until I allowed the Windows Live downloads! #1 Can Microsoft install/overwrite my Start Menu? OR what do you recommend? #2 Should I turn off all security settings & firewalls, uninstall IE and let Windows Live download anew? Basically, to do these things, I'm cut-off from access thru the computer!!! Help, please.

I got sooo frustrated with all the run around and the " turn this off and shut that down" BS from the help desk that I totally wiped Internet Explorer off my system and went with Firefox. I now have no problems whatsoever, and all my favorites stay where they should be. My system is back to normal, and oh yeah, my access to the internet is 10 times faster than it was with IE!!!

If I had produced a product like that for my company I would have been fired!!  I bet those retards got a raise!!!!

Hello, I wish someone would answer you because I have the same problem. I have downloaded and supposedly installed ie8. My computer indicates that I have ie8 on it but it won't connect to the internet. When I try to uninstall ie8, the computer indicates that part of ie8 is in use so I cannot uninstall. When I try to revert to ie7, my computer tells me that I cannot do that because I have a newer version on the computer. I am using Mozilla Firefox right now (thankfully I had it on my computer). Since I am unfamiliar with it, I would much rather go back to ie.
    Someone please help us.

    Rock1948,
You may or may not be computer literate and it doesn't matter. Firefox is very easy to learn and use, it actually functions a lot like IE8. Things are in a different location so you spend a little time finding them, but that's about it. And trust me, it's a lot faster loading web pages. IE8 is nothing but a very poor attempt from MS to try and stay ahead of others and they have failed miserably! All you're going to get with IE8 is plugs, links, defaulting home pages, all that force you to MSN products you don't want or use. And it doesn't matter if you delete them or not, the next reboot brings them all back. It's bad enough with spam in your email, but now it proliferates your web browser!

Stay with the Firefox, you'll be happier in the long run.

To un-install merely go to windows update. Look in "in-stalled" updates.

Scroll through the list, then un-install. Windows will auto - matically re-install Ie7 for you.

just remember to keep it updated.

My issue is that I upgraded to 8.0 or so I thought but in control panel it still states Ie7.  I can access the net but not all the features are there and I would rather roll back to Ie7 which worked.  Is that still doable since control panel seems to say 7?  I also tried to go back to last known good [yesterday] and that has put it in a worse shape.  So I still want 7 on - working - any thoughts how to get there please?

Hello I have read all the help you have been giving. I am what you call a computer dummy. I have HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Enertainment Notebook Pc Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. I bought the computer in March of 2009. It did not have IE8 on it then. I have Kaspersky Internet Security and Windows Defender on here. When IE8 came up on my Windows update I automatically hit the install botton. I did not disable Kaspersky or anything else. As far as I know I have no problems. But like I said I am a computer dummy and still trying to learn what I can. If I did have a problem would I know it right away or not? I do not want to uninstall IE8 if I do not have to. But in what you say I should of disabled Kaspersky before I installed IE8 but I did not. Please give me advise. Thank you.

Thank you in advance, Vincenzo. I have two problems, likely related:

Problem 1:  Cannot install IE8 because setup thinks there is a newer version already installed.

(How can that be if I'm trying to install the latest, and the old was uninstalled?)
IE would not open, did not show up in the Control Panel program uninstall list.
I uninstalled using the alternative method from Microsoft sup[port: http://tinyurl.com/m3mbal
Downloaded IE8, but Setup claims that a more recent version has been detected.

I'll bet that a registry tweak will fix this. Yes?

Problem 2: (Related?) Windows cannot update (Code 80004002).
    Vista 64 SP1 ver 6.0.6001
Installed all updates through: Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.59.251.0) (Installed 6/24)
A few days after this, I noticed the problems.

    Tried reregistering DLL's:
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll

These failed even with windows firewall turned off:
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Thanks again.

WOW Nice!!! Looks like he is like me!  Just wants his computer to WORK!!!!!  Not everyone would now to shut this off, and that off, and make sure the third party thingy is shut down, before your push the annoying update icon!!!  I am a lower mid level user.  And I have to use Firefox, and my graphics are all !*##@! up!!!!  I just got a response from a complaint Email I sent.  It was full of great info that is OF NO USE!!! Yep I am annoyed!! TO NO END!!! All I want is IE7 back, and my computer to work.  But something tells me I am gonna have pay someone to fix it.  I know who I WON'T pay!!! And If I see another uninstall with the "Add and remove programs" suggestion, I'm gonna SCREAM!! this DOESN'T WORK(for me)!!!  So now I'm stuck with my computer (and my new graphics card) looking worse than my old VGA back in the day of BBS's.  Again thank you very much for this great program!!!!

PS here is a line from my response Email from my complaint Email

"I am sorry that you were unable to work with Internet Explorer 8 appropriately."   HAHAHAHahahaha LOL He just called my an Idiot! LOL

Thanks, Vincenzo. With a lot of help from MS phone support, I got the IE8 problem fixed.
(Amazingly, there was less than a 2 minute wait!)

It appears (although I'm not certain) that IE8-64bit was already installed, but just not showing up.

The error message from Setup was not quite accurate ... it was not a "newer" version, but rather one that was "not older."
If the message had been precise, I might have found the problem earlier and on my own.

MS refused to help on the Windows Update problem, because I have an OEM version. I'll try Gateway's customer service and let you know how it turns out.

    Max:
How did you uninstall IE 8 ?
I have tried the remover in control panel , and it goes about 3/4 of the way through the uninstall then say it can't copy
needed files ? That cancels th euninstall!

    Hey,

I think I'm having the same problem you had.

IE8 came up in my windows updates last night. Downloaded it. Or I presume I did anyways. I say presume because when I look in my windows updates history now it says that the installation in fact failed.

Then, after my computer restarted, whenever I clicked to open internet explorer nothing happened! Really frustrating. I can't find it in the uninstall programmes list and my windows update now tells me the same thing "setup cannot continue because a more recent version of internet explorer has been detected on this computer".

Tried calling the Microsoft IE8 support line but they're closed.

Can you tell me how they helped you fix yours so I don't have to wait until tomorrow now??

    Thanks.

Had both the same problems, Started after Explorer 8 install. My system would just freeze when I opened a page in IE, EVERYTHING FROZE had to turn off and reboot to recover. The resolution had to do with the fact that 64 Bit Windows will not install correctly if you have more than 3 GB of Memory installed on the motherboard. I had to reformat my drive Drop installed ram to 3 GB on motherboard and reinstall Vista 64. Once that was accomplished I then was able to down load updates and re downloaded and installed explorer 8. Make sure you go to Windows UPDATE and download and install everything it recommends BEFORE reinstalling Explorer 8.

I still get freezes when opening some sites with Explorer 8 so now use Firefox for everything except the Microsoft Sites that REQUIRE IE

Looks like business model for FireFox will be improving until Microsoft learns to play the Browser Game !

I like many others here are having problems getting IE8 to work right. I have installed and uninstalled it 3 times trying to get it to work right. It installs with no errors. I use the custom setupn not the one that is ticked to install their home page, search engine and so forth. I keep the settings I have installed. After it's installed, when I click on Internet Explorer to open my home page I get the ring on pointer going around and around and no page opens and if I click on Google also nothing opens till it goes for awhile and all of them opens all at once on top of each other. So looks like anything to do with going on the web will not work when you click on them like they should. Could be more troubles but I have not past this problem yet. All my internal programs work great like Computer, Documents and so forth. I tried to wait out Microsoft to redo the update so everyone can install it with no problems. Look like that will never happon as they are busy with the next windows operating system that will give us problems. Any help will bw welcomed.

THis has been so informative and helpful after being just soooo frustrated and crazy disturbed but I have my first question.  Do you think there is any real value to IE8 or drop the idea of trying (not savy in this area at all) to fix, just unload garbage???  Please advise

I have a Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop that came pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium 32 bit edition. Whenever I try to install IE8 I get an error just before Windows finishes rebooting telling me that the "upgrades didn't configure properly...reverting" and IE7 remains on my system. I've went to Microsoft's support site and done all the things they've listed including disabling all add-ons and disabling Norton Internet Security 2009 to no avail. The exact same thing happens when I attempt to install Vista's SP2, not happening. I have more than required disk space avialable and 3 gb DDR2 ram as well as a dual core CPU running at 2ghz. I'm at the end of my rope with Vista and Microsoft at this point. This is my last hope to upgrade. The funny thing is I downloaded and installed the Beta version of IE8 and it worked(though full of annoying bugs) but uninstalled it because of the bugs. NOW it won't allow me to upgrade!

    Hi to everyone,

Wil this ever ends? Well my experience is more "graphical", if i can put it in these terms. My computer has a core 2 Duo E6550 - 2.33GHz CPU, a Nvidia 8400 GS GPU, 2 GB of RAM, MB Asus P5KR - Chipset Intel P35, HD 250 GB and i'm using Windows Vista Business 32 bit x86 OS, i guess that´s enough to run IE8, right?

Ok, first time IE8 showed up in my available updates, it showed as released in 23/Jun/2009, so i installed it then, besides the clock gadget stopping and this weird purple frame around the calendar gadget, all the rest seemed to be working fine, however i didn't use it that much time too, at least not enough for me to find out if everything was really working ok, installing and uninstallng it was just fine but like i said my problem was the "graphical" issues so i went back again to the IE7, after all it ain't that old, by the way does anyone recalls when was IE7 released, well that´s another story.

Now IE8 is showing up in my available updates list as published in 28/Jul/2009, it had to be a corrected version, so i thought, probably is, anyway i decided to try it over again but same results: clock gadget stops and the weird purple frame still around the calendar gadget, once again i´ve uninstalled it and back again to IE7.

The only thing i think i haven't tried yet was the "Reboot twice after installing IE8 Final" thing, but frankly i don't think that would solve my issues. On the other hand i´m sorry that it has that behaviour in my computer because i really liked the new visual of it and would also like to have it running on my computer without the gadget's "glitches".

I hope that the great team of MS technitians/engineers, or anybody, finds out a solution for this.

    Be well.

I am running XP media center with SP3 and IE8, which is fully updated. I also have Norton 360 running for security.
I had experienced a problem viewing Microsoft web pages only, where some pages had content overlapping and on other Microsoft sites links where not selectable. I uninstalled IE8, on a number of occasions along with IE7 and SP3 and reinstalled while I disabled my firewall and antivirus. Nothing I did resolved the problem.
After two and a half hours on the phone with a Microsoft technician the problem was resolved. The technician went further than my previous attempts by totally disabling my Norton security (not just the firewall and antivirus) and uninstalling IE8 and IE7. Also he uninstalled every update for each IE version. Both versions where then reinstalled after reboots in administrative mode with Internet connectivity (Pressing F8 on reboot gets you there). IE7 was reinstalled without retrieving any updates since IE8 contains all needed updates. IE8 was installed after another reboot in administrative mode (F8). Then rebooting in normal mode any updates required where obtain through the Windows update. Problem resolved.
My reason for writing is that I find it hard to believe that Microsoft doesn't have a paper or a bulletin for this problem with the appropriate steps to take for a proper resolution. They seem to be aware of the problem because it is specifically mentioned in the preliminary phone tree messages. God I hate phone trees. If a paper existed then I would have taken care of the problem myself without spending two and a half hours on the phone sharing my computer with a Microsoft tech. Firefox doesn't have any of these problems.

I've given up on Internet Explorer.  Upgrading to IE8 caused so many problems that - on the advice of my computer's technical support department - I uninstalled it and went back to Internet Explorer 7.  But IE still kept hanging.  So, as was recommended by Microsoft, I tried deleting some of the add-ons.  When that didn't work, I deleted ALL the add-ons.  When THAT didn't work, and my computers kept hanging (it was happening on all of mine - work, home, laptop) I decided to just give up.  I've uninstalled Internet Explorer completely and gone to another browser.  I'm not having any problems now.

For Info: Windows XP Prof SP3. Just recovered using start up disk with the help of Dell Support.

    Hello Vincenenzo,

Been reading all around the problems I've been having with IE 7 and just want to know or confirm is this action that I propose to take is safe and will or help to sort out some of the issues. First problem is everwhere I investigate I am pushed to upgrade to IE 8. To do that on top of a faulty IE 7 seems a bit foolhardy and does not sit comfortably with me. Of course I may be wrong about this an upgrading to IE 8 might be the right thing to do.

I delibertly installed IE 7 to avoid IE 8, which was not a sucess. But IE 7 is not performing very well, getting error messages, script messages, page not loading corectly etc etc.  My logic tells me to completly uninstall the program and re-install it. Is my thinking all right or am I completly off track?

I do not want to download any new programs until I can resolve this issue.

If you have any thoughts on the issue I would be delighted to hear them.

Thanks to you or indeed anyone who may put me on the right track.

It sounds like you are not aware of this problem...so please forgive if I'm telling you something you already knew.

And, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if any program is not showing a way to remove it easily then it's probably not a good program (aka spyware).

There are a lot of hoax programs out there which purport to be an "anti-virus" program and they quite often want you to pay them to remove something bad, when they are actually the bad program.

I would get your computer checked professionally, and be cautious about using it for anything confidential or relating to financial affairs until you do.

I thought this was a series of answers for IE8 under Win 7, at least that's the sequence of forums that I see at the top of this thread
Windows > Windows 7 Forums > Internet Explorer > Please read: "HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems"

Now given that IE8 is part of Win7 and that I have not found a location that offers a version of IE7 that will allow it to be installed under Win 7 it appears the only real solution to IE8 problems when running Win7 is to delete IE8  and then install Firefox or Chrome.

Providing instructions to install IE7 under a Win7 thread is of no value (unless someone can point to a ver of IE7 that I can install)

I have tried the turn off and turn on IE8 "Fix" twice but IE8 still delets toolbar add-ons. Even when I lock the tool bar with the add-on showing.

    Dabur972
As I said in my message I already turned of and back on IE8 "TWICE".  There is no Install or reinstall of IE8 possible.

Why would turning on the Win7 feature (IE8)  a third time solve the vulnerability that is part of Win7/IE8?

NOTE I really do not understand why there is an "Install IE8" forum under Win7.  You get IE8 automatically installed for you when you install Win7.

You have no option to install any other version of IE. You can only "Turn Windows features Off or On"  BUT this seems to be the only place I might get an answer as MS Support doesn't care to provide a method for me to report this problem.

I have identified a vulnerability in IE8 when I install a program    FAV110.exe      that results in IE8 no longer working properly.   Now you can say it is the fault of FAV110.exe but Foxfire does not have the same problem so I consider this a vulnerability to Win7/IE8.  Also FAV110.exe works fine under IE8 when installed under WinXP so the real vulnerability is the Win7 OS.

I do not know what other changes might cause other parts of Win7 to malfunction.

The only "Fix" is to re-install WIN7 and I am getting tired of wasting a couple of hours doing that.

But thanks for the reply anyway.

The only problem I've found with IE8 is when I've to tried to insall it on an XP machine that has IE6 and has been updated to Service Pack (SP) 3.  During the install it states that it needs to download updates (which I believe are already in SP3), but then reports that IE8 cannot be installed on this Service Pack!?!

If I uninstall SP3 and install IE8 and allow the download of the updates it works fine and then I can install the SP3.

What I find really odd though is that didn't SP3 come out before IE8?

Even stranger is that if I allow WSUS to update the PC's it will fail as it installs SP3 before IE8, so I have to go round and manually install IE8 before allowing WSUS to install SP3!

That's my two penance worth anyway, make of it what you will.

Found the FIX, at lease for some people.  If you are having problems opening links in Word, Outlook, Excel and possibly some other programs or links in email do not work or you get the error message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

Did you install and then remove Google Chrome?  If so it corrupted your registry.

    check out the info here

    and here

It is possible that other brousers may do the same but I have only confirmed the Chrome issue.

The FIX requires you to re-install Chrome or to edit your Registry.
