    Hello, waveydavey1

Thank you for using the Answers Forum.

AutoComplete may be disabled, you can check by going to Tools, then Internet Options. On the Internet Options screen go to the Content tab, and click the Settings button in the AutoComplete section. In the Settings make sure that User names and passwords on forms is checked.

Let us know if this helps or if you need further assistance.

This solution doesn't work for me either, and AutoComplete is set to ON for Forms, and User Names and passwords.

I have the same issue - I upgraded my laptop this weekend and went from IE7 to IE8 and the auto complete does not work - in IE7 it would come up and ask for my password at the start of my session and log me in every where i went - I loved this feature - how can I get this back?

I have the same issue - AutoComplete NOT working at all in IE8.
I am ready to switch back to Firefox if someone doesn't bother to answer.

I have double checked and made sure AutoComplete was turned on, and yet it is still not working.

    Hey Charlesrr, that's not true.

I've already added facebook to my favorites, and it still does not remember passwords.

I've tried everything too, including clearing all my cookies (actually going in an deleting everything in the folder), and even re-installing IE8.

In the meantime, I'll suppose I'll just wait until IE9, and keep using Chrome.

Just noticed that as well as that "advanced" options flag for temp files (which does not affect cookies - I have it ticked), IE8 has a new bit in the middle of the main "general" tap in internet options. It's so big, I completely didn't notice it until now.

"Browsing History: delete temp files, saved passwords, history, cookies, and web form info" (on exit)

This would definitely affect your cookies. I have it turned off.

Sorry if you've seen this before ;)

Try adding the website to trusted sites and/or local intranet in the internet options.

Tool> internet options> Security (tab)> sites> advanced> add in the address and select add.

Making sure that you apply the changes and restart IE8.

    That should work.

Tried both of those, still no success.

And besides, I would have to add every site I want my password remembered to the trusted section?

    That isn't right.

I have had the same if not similar problem with IE8 using Windows XP Pro.  In my case my stored name and password is randomly erased.  This seems to ocurr two or three times a month.  Each time I have to re-enter the information.

I have reviewed all the suggestions on this forum as well as other forums that indicated the individuals were having similar problems.

Erasing information without warning is a problem....

IE8 is garbage. I have tried everything to get the Autocomplete to work. Its a no go! I need this feature in the business I am in. Without it I have to use Firefox. The Web version of Outlook does not work well with FF so IE is preferred for that but without Autocomplete, IE is totally USELESS.

Microsoft, you make billions in profits. You mean to tell me you have no solution for this???

It's not face book or hotmail that remembers your login id it's ie8, facebook is a secure site that doesn't remember your details so you need to get ie8 to do it for you...... the simplest way is to go to another site, not one run by a major corporation, that requires an email address to log in ( I used mummydeli.co.uk ) type in your email address in the login area then enter any password, even if it's just one letter, it won't log you in but the process of doing this will make ie8 autofill remember your email address and it should then remember it next time you use facebook...... hope this helps, it worked for me.

Ok, taking your advice I tried this.

I went to Mail.com and put in my email addy and password, and yes a dialog box came up asking to remember my password. I said yes.

I logged out, shut down IE8 and restarted, and went back to mail.com.

I put in my email addy, and yes, my password just popped up, so it remembered it.

I then went right to facebook to type in my username and password, but no dialog box popped up to remember my password!

At least I'm a step further though. Let me know what's up.

Websites can be built to have the option to disable autocomplete on fields.  This is a security measure.  For example, banks don't generally allow the use of autocomplete, hence, saving password feature is also not going to work. I hope this info helps.

I know.  I usually recognize the ones that do that, and that is not what I am talking about.

On any particular site (such as this one), my correct username (and password) will be auto entered one time, and be blank the next.

Coincidentally, I noticed today that I'm having the same problem, and I know Firefox it works fine with the sites I tried to "remember password" today.  After looking in my Internet Options, I noticed I had "Ask me to remember passwords" check box unticked.  I think I remember unticking this a few days ago thinking it would automatically remember my passwords without asking me.  Now some sites are remembering my passwords, unless they are network pop logins, in which I have never been able to get those to work in IE.  I'm close to switching back to Firefox.  Good luck.

I have figured out a work around for this issue. Do not sign in on the first page of Facebook. When you reach the first page click on Login (leave your info blank). It will take you to a second page that shows a login in the middle of the screen  Bookmark this page, check the remember me box and then login. Use this page to login instead of the first page. Works for me.

The login name is remembered but the password is not, the site is on the trusted zone and it dosen't work.!! What can I say.!!!!????? What is the meaning of the trusted zone then???  I check the box "remember my password" but it dosen't work ether ...It only works when I have my browser open but when I close it , then everything is blank as a bat ..!!!!

I've been having the same problem with Hotmail ever since installing IE8. It doesn't remember my login name. It also doesn't remember other login names. It used to remember if I logged into more than one Hotmail account and allowed me choose from the list. I've already tried the suggestions listed in this thread. It appears the problem is another new IE8 feature.

A word of advice waveydavey1, uncheck David's comments as the answer. He didn't really answer your's or anyone elses questions. If it is checked as answered, MS will ignore it completely.

That's what they did with the question regarding IE8's inability to remember the most recently used Favorites folder. MS totally ignored it even tho there were 40+ replies and 11,790+ views. They only came back with a response after users contacted MS thru other means. Of course, even then, MS Support Engineer Michael only repeated the original response from MS Support Engineer Jack: MS dropped the IE7 feature from IE8 and refuses to change it back to what the users want.

<<inability to remember the most recently used Favorites folder>>

If you're referring to the fact that when you choose "Add to favorites," the folder tree is always initially collapsed instead of expanded to its most recent state, then yes, this was deliberately changed in IE8.

Unfortunately, this change was required for legal reasons which (as a non-lawyer) I'm not able to discuss.

You can add easily add multiple Favorites to a selected folder by pinning open the Favorites sidebar and dragging the favicon from the address bar to the Favorites sidebar tree.

There are multiple different problems that can cause issues of this nature.

    Guys,

I had the same problem, very frustrating. I was having problems with IE8 crashing and was advised to disable add-ons. This helped IE8 stop crashing but had side effects such as not remebering log-in details on Hotmail & Facebook. In the end I enabled all add-ons again and it fixed the problem. To enable add-ons, go to IE8, tools, manage add-ons & make sure they are all enabled. This may effect how IE8 operates but you may be able to find out which add-ons are required to remeber log-in details etc and which are not required to avoid IE8 crashing.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you EricLaw for being the one person who has provided some, tho minimal, insight into the Add to Favorites issue. I still wonder why MS is being so secretive about it. Why didn't MS have one of its lawyers answer the question which, btw, is addressed in a different thread locked by MS. Does this now mean that MRUs can no longer be used in any Windows product? If not, it would appear quite simple for MS programmers to write a workaround. If it is true that this legal issue affects all MRUs in use then nearly all Windows products (not just MS developed software) would be in violation.

I tried all proposed solutions in this and other threads. No solution works for us. Since we moved to IE8 the password feature has completely gone. No password is being rembered, nor is being asked If you want to save the password. What's the suggested workaround by Microsoft.

I'm now planning to deploy Thinkvantage password Manager by Lenovo in order to give the people a way of using this feature. I hope Microsoft will come up with a solutions very fast, because this sucks!! big time!!

I'm having something similar to the OP's problem.
For me, autocomplete works. The popup box to remember password does show, I click Yes. The username and password IS store, it WILL autocomplete forms.
The problem for me is, IE8 refuses to keep my login session. I would then have to re-enter my username and password for forums I have already ticked "remember me" or "keep me logged in".

I have read EricLaw's website and that didn't quite handly my situation.

Here's what worked for me in IE8. I went into to the SAFETY/INPRIVATE SETTINGS (Safety Menu) and turned it off. I then went to the General settings tab and deleted the cookies, temp internet files and then the InPrvate Filtering data. Once I did that, Facebook (I was using it as a test) now remembers who I am. Hopefully this will help. (Make sure your cookies are set to allow session cookies)

For which OS and which version of IE?  AFAIK rsabase.dll  was last provided in  IE6sp1  pre-XP...

    http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=rsabase.dll&S=1

Were you thinking of  rsaenh.dll  instead for some reason?

Unfortunately the DLL Help Database hasn't been kept up to date but I think there is enough there to show that rsabase.dll wasn't even in  XPsp2.

This worked for me perfectly, however by some of the replies it wasn't described very well.

Gotto: tools/internet options/privacy/inprivate settins....... at the bottom of the page. untick disable toolbars and extensions etc.

Then restart your browser, this should do it....

Does some of the username and password that uses java have anything to do with it?
I run IE8 32bit, but have only Java 64bit installed (for a specific reason).
Again, with or without Java32bit FF does not have the same recurring issue.

It may be simpler just to use a password reminder utility such as RoboForm.
Details of a discussion about it are here http://nemesisv.blogspot.com/2009/03/roboform-and-ie8.html

I know a guy who uses it and he wouldn't be without it.
I haven't used it myself but seen it and it looks handy.
I know IE8 should remember passwords but until it's fixed it's always handy to have a workaround.

Autocomplete is on as you recommend but still doesn't work for me.  What (simple) thing can I do to make IE8 remember my usernames and passwords for a variety of sites?  Also, when I used Firefox it would autocomplete my name and address whenever I had to use this info for any site (usually online shopping).  Can I get IE8 to do the same?
    thanks

I never had this problem until I went to Windows 7.  Now I have it on every site I go to.  Some sites stay logged in for a day, some sites literally log me off within a few minutes.  Some sites I click on a link to navigate within the site and when I click on their home link to return me to the main site page I am logged out.  Twitter.  Flickr.  Facebook.  YouTube... they are ALL doing it.  On Youtube I am literally being logged out after viewing each single video.  In all cases I have clicked on the "remember me" or "keep me logged in" boxes.

I have tried resetting caches.  I have tried uninstalling Windows Live Signin.  I have tried resetting the entire Internet Explorer to purge any plugins or addons.  I have tried changing the option in IE for handling cookies to say always allow session cookies.  None of these fixes have worked.

    Thanks for the help!

    My problem:

“When I click on the Gmail username box, I no longer get a drop-down list of my other Gmail usernames. How do I get them back?“

The solution (AutoComplete somehow became disabled):

Click on Tools, then Internet Options,

on the Internet Options screen, click on the Content tab,

then click the AutoComplete Settings button,

in the Settings make sure that “User names and passwords on forms” is checked

and also check the “prompt me to save passwords.”

I can now reload my Gmail usernames drop-down list with my many Gmail usernames.

    Thanks for the help!

I have read every post and tried every proposed solution and my log in cookies still drop out after a short while (I have even permanently disabled 'In Private') all to no effect.

I agree with some posters that IE8, Windows 7 and Microsoft generally are still not fit for purpose. Poor show!

IE8 will not remember any log in details for forums, email, bank, amazon, yahoo, facebook etc etc.. for more than one or two sessions and never for even a day!!!

Yes I've done auto complete, disabled Norton, reduced my privacy and security sessions to the minimum put all the URLs in Trusted zones etc etc etc etc.... but nada, nothing, zip, zilch, zero progress.

    Microsoft should be ashamed!

I just saw this in the forums FAQ under I already signed in to Forums, why do I get signed out automatically?:

    Important Note:
When you sign in to the Forums site, it is recommended that you retain the default LiveID setting of Save my e-mail address. Changing the setting to Save my e-mail address and password can lead to problems in signing in to the Forums.

This seems counter-intuitive, but I guess it is worth a try.

I just fixed it all by dumping Internet Explorer and going with Apple's Safari.  I've been on all day with about six tabs up and not once have I been signed out.  This proves it wasn't Windows Live Signin or my internet security.  It is a flaw with Internet Explorer.  Seriously, I wouldn't allow the excuse of Windows Live Sign-in being the problem anyway.  Since both Windows Live Sign-in and Internet Explorer are two Microsoft products that are paired I expect them to both work together without issue.  Sadly, Apple's Safari has all the same features that Internet Explorer has AND works without flaw so far.  It's great to be able to go well past five minutes without being logged out of a website.

This may be the answer and has worked so far for me (W7 64bit IE8 Norton 2010): http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=82251

Its at the bottom of the page on the link above and says:

HERE IS A SOLUTION that worked for me.

    Background:

I had same problem: Dissapearing Persistant Logon for Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Bank Accounts.
I also have Vista, intsalled NIS 2010 and IE 8 lately.... I had the same behavier on 2 PCs.

The problem seems to happen when you installe NIS2010 and IE8 in a certain sequence. I disabled every tasks in NIS2010, it did nothing. I deinstalled IE8, the problem persisted...

I look all over the web for a solution and did not find any.. but a lot of people do have same problem.

    Solution:

Open Internet Options, under General Tab click Delete in Browing History, make sure every check box is ON except top one (Preserve...) and click Delete.

That in theory should delete every History... but it does not do it completely (THAT IS THE BUG)

In General Tab click Settings in Browsing History, click View Files, manually delete the remaining Cookies.

Now you can access your usual site, logon to them and click Keep me Logon, it should now kept you logon for weeks. (At least it work for me on both my PCs)

Did this again and this time also deleted the contents of 'view objects' as well as 'view files' and, dare I say it, my login details have persisted for two whole days now!!!!!!!!

Interesting that this seems to stem from a bug in IE8 that results from upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 and/or upgrading to Norton 2010.

Or perhaps Microsoft sneaked in a Windows Update fix when we we'ent looking?

I've been on the Beta bandwagon for some time now, and never encountered this till it's bonified release. Which seem to be right about the time of 7's release.
It even seems slower than Beta's... which is not usually the case...
I've always backed IE when friends/family asked about what browser to use, and now I look like a douche as I'm now eating my words, and having to resort to Google Chrome..

IMO, you should not have to make tweaks to get a browser(or anything for the matter) to work correctly, right out of the box. I can't think of anything else to say, but that it's broke.
Eric_law's answer is garbage. You're going to tell me it's a website's problem, or that I need to go in and tweak IE? When it worked just fine in IE7 and IE8 Beta?

If I was to build Windows 7, I would have compiled all the stupid annoyances that Microsoft(Big Brother) likes to pack into their latest OS's into one little spot. Instead of rummaging through multiple places to turn off junk like UAC... IE Enhanced Security... configure Firewall... Firewall with Advanced Security... Like an "admin control panel"...

While making 7(Vista too) easier for your average idiot, they made it harder/more frustrating for those that have a decent clue.

Don't get me started on Server OS's browsers' settings. Hey jerks!!! If I want to surf the web(namely download a freakin driver) then I should be well aware that I put my server at risk... I don't need/want you telling me not to...... or WORSE, blocking it!!!

I have tried the nuclear option as outlined above but noticed another possible cause.

In the Browsing History Disk Space to use the recommended setting is 50-250Mb and mine was set at 50.  Could this 50 get taken up and then newer files overwriting the saved files?

I too find this a very frustrating problem. I've tried most/all of the suggestions to no avail. EricLaw's blog post was no help.

I have another laptop running a pre-release Win 7 (Build 7100). I used it extensively and it had no such problem. I compared every Internet Options setting on it with my current IE 8 on the released Win 7 and they matched exactly.

I hope the folks at MS come up with some fix soon.

    Hi Blamont,

I tried your procedure and it worked! Sign-ins across browser closings are now preserved.

For what it's worth, when I did the delete, "view files" showed no more files, so it did remove all the files except for the "view objects" DLLs which I left alone.

It's a great relief. Thank you!!!

I found the following to work:
Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Click 'Reset'>Click 'Reset' again ( I did NOT check the 'Delete personal settings').  Close IE8 and reopen.. go to the websites you want and sign-in.  IE8 should prompt you if you want IE8 to remember.  Choose 'yes' but make sure you do NOT check 'Don't as me this again'.
    Hope that helps someone.
