QuestionWindows 7 Upgrade Advisor

    Experience level - newbie.
I have a pc which has XP professional 64 bit. I only opted for XP because I had heard of problems with Vista. It seems that the problems with Vista were mainly due to insufficient memory which I believe is not a problem with my pc.
As I have problems with simple things like the pc running slow on the internet, not being able to run adobe flash, etc., I want to purchase Windows 7 and I have read about the possibility to purchase Vista now along with an upgrade to Windows 7 when it is available.
After downloading The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from the microsoft site, it wil not run. It is telling me that I must have XP service pack 2. I do have the latest SP2 for 64 bit.

My pc has the following spec.

    WIndows XP Professional x64 Edition
    Version 2003
    Sevice Pack 2

AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6400+  3.21 GHz   3.87 GB of RAM

    Any suggestions ?

    Paul

    Hello Paul,

Thank you for posting.  I can tell you that your system specs are more than sufficient to run either Vista or Windows 7.  If the upgrade advisor is not detecting your SP2 installation you can try uninstalling XP SP2 and then reinstalling SP2. Let us know if this gets the Upgrade Advisor installed.

    Thanks,

    Jack

    Hi Jack,

    Thanks for your reply.

I tried uninstalling SP2 however I am afraid that I seem to have dropped a clanger as I can no longer get on the internet using that machine. I am currently using another machine.

It comes up with “address not found” when I try to create a shortcut to www.msn.com on the desktop using Mozilla.

If I use Internet Explorer, there is a message “The ordinal 410 could not be located in the dynamic link library urlmon.dll.”

Also I can not get to system restore as "Help and Support" or "Search" will not come up.

I am going to put all my files on to a stand alone hard drive and try and get hold of "Vista with Windows 7 upgrade".

In the meantime, I may put my XP pro 64 back on from my original disc.

I have purchased a couple of programs for the pc. Can I just cut and paste program files to a stand alone hard drive?

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to all this !!

    Paul.

    Hello, Paul

Try doing a system file scan. Go to Start, Run, type cmd.exe and press enter. Type the following command and press enter: sfc /scannow

If that doesn’t work, you can try downloading the stand alone installer and burning it to a CD or use a flash drive.

    Let us know the results.

    Thanks for the reply David.

    I got the following instruction.

    Windows File Protection

Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.

Insert your Windows XP Professional x64 Edition CD-ROM now.

I have transferred my files to a stand alone hard drive however I am not sure about all my program files.

I think I can reload most programs anyway.

If I do insert the disc, will it overwrite everything on the PC?....or is there a way of just recovering the files that I need from the disc.

    Paul.

I am still experiencing problems with my pc.

I have been told that I should not have been advised to uninstall SP2 as I can no longer access the internet to download it again in order to reinstall it.

I have tried starting again by running an sfc/scannow command. The following message came up.

Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.

Please insert your SP2 disc now.

I do not have a separate SP2 disc. Where can I acquire one? I was told by someone that SP2 needs to be downloaded from the internet.

The only disc I have is the Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition disc, which I thought would be the only disc required to completely reinstall XP. However, part way through running this disc, the following message comes up

Please insert CD labelled NVIDIA Network Bus Installation Disk #1 into your D drive and click OK.

As I do not have the NVIDIA disc I had to click cancel and continue with the set up.

Running the Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition disc on its own does not cure the problem.

The company who I bought the pc from have gone bankrupt so I can not get any support from them.

I have ordered a DELL laptop with Windows Vista (with prepaid upgrade to Windows 7), however this will not arrive until the end of July.

I do intend to upgrade my main pc to Windows 7 as soon as it becomes available, however I would like to be able to use my pc between now and October.

When I buy the Windows 7 disc, will I be able to just insert it into my cd / dvd drive and then load it on to my pc or will I experience other problems due to the deletion of these DLL files?

Is it possible to download SP2 on another pc,...save the file to a stick,....then run it on my problem pc ?

    Regards,

    Paul.
